ABOUT OUR REGION
Founded in 1986, the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (CBCF) is the largest charitable organization in Canada dedicated exclusively to the fight against breast cancer. Since opening its office in Halifax in 1997, the Atlantic Chapter has awarded $16.4 million to Atlantic Research projects, Atlantic Community Health projects, National projects, and to the Canadian Breast Cancer Research Alliance (CBCRA).
Samples of recently funded projects in Atlantic Canada:
- Dalhousie University researcher Dr. Patrick Lee has received $120,000 in funding over two years to continue his work to determine the role of cancer stem cells in breast cancer. - Dr. Marianna Kulka, a Researcher Officer at the NRC Institute of Nutrisciences and Health in PEI was granted $60,000 over two years to determine the role of mast cells as critical activators of NK cells in human breast carcinoma.
- The New Brunswick Public Libraries Foundation in Fredericton, NB has received $50,000 to purchase breast cancer resources for distribution to all 65 public libraries and bookmobiles in the province.
- The Avalon Dragon’s Association in Mount Pearl, NL was granted $10,000 to purchase a boat and join more than 100 teams in 12 countries in the dragon boat movement.
- The Prince County Hospital Foundation in Summerside, Prince Edward Island has received $100,000 toward the purchase of a digital mammography unit.
